Hurricane Katrina destroyed Bethlehem Children's Center, a ministry started in 1881, and also severely damaged Peace Lake Towers, a community for low-income seniors.

In Louisana, Mississippi and Alabama, thousands of residents have been left homeless by Hurricane Katrina. In Texas, hundreds of homes were damaged, many made uninhabitable, by Hurricane Rita.
