LSS
receives $10,000 for disaster
response efforts from Farm Aid
AUSTIN, Texas-
Lutheran Social Services received $10,000 from Farm
Aid to provide emergency assistance to rural families
across Texas and Louisiana affected by drought and
disasters, including the lingering effects of Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita. The money will be used to cover
basic and immediate needs, including food, rent assistance,
clothing and health related expenses.
Farm
Aid is nationally known for its financial support
for farmers across the states for 20 years.
"The support from
Farm Aid for our Lutheran Disaster Response has been
such a blessing over the past, and continues to serve
the victims of Katrina and Rita," said Mark Minick,
LSS vice president for agency advancement. "It
is important to realize that disasters, both past
and present, continue to affect rural families whose
lives, so dependent upon the land, are still in recovery."
LSS is the agent for
Lutheran Disaster Response in Texas, Louisiana and
Mississippi, and coordinates Lutheran long-term response
efforts in times of disaster. Emergency relief funds
are quickly distributed by LSS through church congregations.
During the period of long-term recovery and rebuilding,
LSS partners with other community and government organizations
to provide financial support for families stricken
by disaster. Since Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf
Coast on Aug. 29, 2005, LSS has provided more than
$392,600 in direct emergency grants to more than 1,300
families. LSS disaster response efforts will cost
more than $7 million through 2007.
