May 12, 2008

SAN ANTONIO - Sundance/Newbridge Educational Publishing made a generous donation of children's books and teacher's manuals to foster children served by Lutheran Social Services in San Antonio. The books, which are for grades K through 8th, have a retail value of $2,500.

The foster children were excited to receive the donation as family service workers presented the books.

"I have given books to several of my foster children and they loved them. They asked right away if they could start reading, and we read together," said family services worker Cheryl Thiery. "The books have beautiful pictures and feature topics like nature, food and nutrition, history, machines, math, and animals."

The LSS foster care program serves more than 1,300 children daily throughout Texas. Of those, 125 are located in and around San Antonio, where case managers are working to handle a rapidly growing program.

LSS is the social service arm of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. LSS affiliated ministries serve more than 35,000 people in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Mississippi regardless of religious beliefs, ethnicity, gender or age. Its ministries include therapeutic foster care, adoption, children's residential treatment centers, disaster response, emergency assistance, senior health care, retirement communities and adult day care.
