Krause Children's Center
earns honor for exceptional efforts

August 16, 2006

Krause Children’s Center was recently chosen to receive the George Washington Honor Medal in this year’s Freedoms Foundation National Awards Program for the center’s exceptional efforts in serving as good citizens, role models and modern day heroes to their youth.

The Krause Children’s Center cares for abused and neglected boys and girls ages 11 to 17. The children have severe emotional and behavioral problems as a result of past abuse and neglect. Most of the children are referred to the center through the child welfare system.

“This is a very prestigous award and we are excited to be chosen,” said Joy Castner, director of volunteer services at Krause. “Our volunteers work very hard for the children at Krause and it’s great to see their efforts rewarded.”

The award specifically honors the Krause Center’s Kozy Korner Point Store, a store where children can shop each week using points they have earned for good behavior. The point store, which has been in operation for 10 years, is the oldest volunteer program at Krause.

Krause Children’s Center’s Director of Volunteer Services, Joy Castner, will accept the award during dinner on Nov. 4 at the Racquet Club in Houston.

The George Washington Honor Medal recognizes the exceptional efforts of those organizations, individuals, schools and corporations who promote an understanding of responsible citizenship and community involvement on a local level. Previous George Washington Honor Medal recipients include U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justices William Rehnquist and Warren Burger, astronaut and Senator John Glenn, Jr., and animator Walt Disney.
