Grant enhances spiritual care program for children
August 2 , 2006

Every day, hundreds of children with severe emotional and behavioral problems receive help, healing and hope at four LSS children’s centers in Texas.

More often than not, it is through the LSS Spiritual Care Program that the children come to know the Lord Jesus during their stays of six to nine months.

This spiritual care initiative recently received a $30,000 grant from The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod World Relief/Human Care. The grant is being used to help seed Deaconess Intern positions at LSS children’s centers, to enhance the level of spiritual care available to the children. The deaconesses will be a valuable part of the therapeutic team which include therapists, counselors, social workers and teachers.

Deaconess Ruth Drum has accepted the position at the Nelson Children’s Center in Denton. Drum earned her Master of Arts in religion at Concordia University, River Forest and has been Spiritual Life Director at Dakota Boys Ranch in Fargo, N.D.

Deaconess April Bishop has accepted the position at the Krause Children’s Center in Katy. Bishop earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in theology and social work at Concordia University, River Forest. Bishop has completed a deaconess chaplaincy intership at Bethesda Lutheran Home in Watertown, Wisconsin.
