Generous grant provides Bibles for foster children
April 10, 2007

AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas District Lutheran Women's Missionary League has made a $20,000 grant to Lutheran Social Services for the purchase of age-appropriate Bibles for children in the LSS foster care program.

"Spiritual care is an essential part of LSS' mission to provide help, healing and hope to all those in need," said Dr. Kurt Senske, CEO of Lutheran Social Services. "The Lutheran Women's Missionary League has been a long-time, faithful partner of ours in God's work. We are truly blessed by their generosity."

LSS has ordered 1,500 Bibles designed for pre-kindergarten, elementary-age children and teenagers. The Bibles, part of the LSS project called Guarding Children's Hearts, will be shipped to the 18 LSS foster care/adoption offices in Texas for distribution to the children. Currently, LSS serves more than 1,300 children in Texas through its foster care ministry.

"The Texas District LWML is very pleased to be part of this project to provide many children their own personal study Bible and to help many un-churched youth grow in their knowledge of the Lord," said Kathy Schkade, vice president of Gospel Outreach for LWML.

LWML, the official women's auxiliary of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year. Membership is now more than 250,000.
