Lana's Story
Lana's sweet face belies a life of terrible trauma. To support a drug habit, Lana's mother started prostituting Lana when she was just seven years old. After years of sexual abuse and neglect, Lana came to the attention of child welfare authorities and was removed from her home. Her mother's parental rights were terminated. She never knew her father.
Because of the abuse she suffered, Lana was depressed and suicidal. She was placed in several foster homes and psychiatric hospitals before she was admitted to New Life Children’s Center.
When she was first admitted, Lana often cut herself. She told her New Life therapist that she preferred the pain of the cuts to the emotional pain she felt when she thought about the abuse she had suffered in her life.
After several months of intensive therapy and counseling, Lana is turning her life around. She has discovered she has a natural talent for art. For the first time, she is thinking about college. Lana dreams of being a counselor, helping other abused children like herself.
"New Life saved my life. Before I came here, I didn't care if I lived or died. I never laughed and now I laugh all the time," says Lana. "I can't say 'thanks' enough to the wonderful supporters of New Life and the staff and volunteers at New Life for making a difference in my life."
